The Symptoms of Chlamydia

Many people have no obvious Chlamydia symptoms. However, 25% of women (1 in 4) and 50% of men (half) do develop symptoms which can show 1-3 weeks after coming into contact with Chlamydia or sometimes many months later. It's important to get screened, even if you feel fine and have no symptoms - just to make sure.

If you do get Chlamydia symptoms you might notice:

In women

  • unusual vaginal discharge
  • pain and/or burning when peeing
  • pain during and/or after sex
  • bleeding after sex or between periods
  • lower abdominal pain (pain in the lower belly)

In men

  • a discharge from the tip of the penis
  • pain and/or burning when weeing
  • irritation at the tip of the penis
  • painful swelling of the testicles
